Sam Burgess Undergraduate Research Award Winner Chosen

The Libraries Awards Committee has selected Thomas Ladendorf as the winner of the 2012-2013 Sam Burgess Undergraduate Research Award. The award recognizes excellence in undergraduate research projects by rewarding students who demonstrate extraordinary skill and creativity in the application of services and collections of IU Libraries.

Mr. Ladendorf won the $500 award for his research project, “‘Excellent Vertues’ and Virtuosic Speculations: Medical and Historical Knowledge about Coffee in England, 1650-1730.” The committee stated that Mr. Ladendorf did an excellent job of using the library resources to support his ideas, including finding the Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO) by utilizing the IU Libraries’ History Resources page.

Mr. Ladendorf will be recognized at the IU Libraries Retirement and Recognition Reception on April 24, 2013.

Established in 2007, the award is supported by an endowment started by Jo Burgess, Associate Librarian Emeritus and former Wylie House director in memory of her late son, a voracious and eclectic reader. Her support of this endowment also recognizes the importance of IU Libraries to undergraduate education.
